Shannon Cockayne

Class of 2016

Shannon grew up in a proud military family and served as a Department of Defense civil servant for over 20 years. These days, her feet are firmly planted in Oregon, living in the community of Independence with her husband Derron and their dogs, Hazelnut and Nutella, and cats, Gracie and Baci.
Shannon is the Chair of the Women's Caucus for the Democratic Party of Oregon. Her 2017 goal for the Caucus is to mobilize its membership to preserve and protect women's rights in Oregon during President Trump's reign. She's a former Vice-Chair of the Polk County Democrats and a current PCP and is involved in reaching out to Democrats in this red rural county by organizing monthly Drinking Liberally events. Shannon's also active with the Salem Progressive Film Series and works on progressive candidate and issue campaigns here in Oregon and in her former home state of Louisiana. She firmly believes blue/purple states have a responsibility to help turn red states blue!
Shannon works in her community as a City of Independence researcher for the Independence Heritage Museum. It's a job she loves as it allows her to connect with her community by sharing local history. In her spare time, Shannon enjoys watching Scandinavian/Nordic and British dramas, reading, and keeping in touch with far-flung friends.
